Lake States Business Trends July 2026 – Stable Demand In The Lake States

Hardwood suppliers throughout the Lake States region reported generally steady market conditions, with several contacts noting improved activity compared to recent months despite continued cautious purchasing patterns among customers.

Sources described stable demand across a range of species, while flooring, cabinetry and residential project work continued supporting movement throughout the region.

A Michigan hardwood supplier handling white Hard and Soft Maple, Red and White Oak, Hickory, Walnut and Cherry said the company experienced an unexpectedly strong start to the year. “The first quarter was gangbusters, which honestly surprised us,” he said.

According to the supplier, Hickory has continued performing better than anticipated, while cabinet and flooring markets remain relatively healthy compared to conditions seen recently. “Hickory is surprisingly doing well,” the contact said.

The source noted that wetter seasonal conditions earlier in the year created some challenges involving logging activity and raw material availability, although supply conditions have improved as weather patterns have become more favorable. “Log supply is getting back to normal now that we’re getting out of the wetter season,” he said.

He added that while current conditions have softened slightly compared to the beginning of the year, overall activity remains stable and is still showing improvement compared to this time last month. “Cabinet and flooring markets are pretty good compared to last month, just not as strong as at the beginning of the year,” the contact said.

Looking ahead, the Michigan supplier expressed cautious optimism for the coming months and indicated that drier weather conditions could help create a better balance between supply availability and pricing throughout the market.

According to the source, improved logging access and more stable inventories during the dry season may help support both production schedules and customer purchasing activity moving forward. The contact also noted that buyers appear more willing to request quotes and discuss upcoming projects compared to earlier periods when uncertainty kept many customers on the sidelines.

The supplier added that many customers continue purchasing conservatively and remain focused primarily on immediate production needs rather than building large inventories. “Overall market sentiment has become more stable as weather conditions and supply availability continue improving,” he said.

In Wisconsin, a hardwood supplier handling Red and White Oak, Hard and Soft Maple, Hickory, Cherry, Basswood and Aspen, said Red Oak and Hard Maple were currently among the stronger moving species in the region. “Red Oak is moving well, along with Hard Maple,” he said.

He indicated that customers continue buying carefully and primarily for immediate project needs, although inquiry levels have remained relatively consistent. “Buyers are currently focused on controlling inventory levels while still maintaining enough material to support business activity. In many cases it’s a just-in-time scenario that we have all become accustomed to.”

The hardwood supplier said customers continue monitoring costs closely, especially in areas tied to transportation, labor and overall operating expenses. “Many of our customers are attempting to balance cautious purchasing habits with the need to keep production schedules moving efficiently right now,” he explained.

An Indiana source handling Red and White Oak, Hard and Soft Maple and Hickory, described demand as consistent overall. “Our customers continue placing orders steadily despite economic uncertainty and fluctuating operating costs affecting portions of the market,” he said.

According to the contact, purchasing patterns remain disciplined throughout much of the region, with many customers avoiding large speculative inventory positions while continuing to buy for active projects and production requirements.

He also noted that while customers remain cautious overall, steady demand across core species has helped maintain balanced market conditions throughout much of the region in recent weeks.
