Granite Valley Forest Products: Built Through Integration, Quality And Vision
“In an industry where reputation is built on performance, Granite Valley Forest Products has established itself through investment, integration and an unwavering commitment to quality. As one of the Midwest’s most capable and vertically integrated hardwood suppliers, we control nearly every step of the process — from log procurement and sawmilling to kiln drying, processing and distribution. This level of integration allows Granite Valley to deliver consistency, reliability and quality at scale. Backed by a modern facility and a growth-minded approach, Granite Valley has built an operation designed to deliver the consistency, quality and service today’s hardwood customers demand,” shared company President Kathy Welter

The foundation of that operation began with the acquisition of a drying facility in Marathon, WI. Under the leadership and vision of founder Gus Welter, the company expanded strategically, adding drying, manufacturing, transportation and sawmill assets that would ultimately become Welter Forest Products. Today, that Wisconsin based organization includes Granite Valley Forest Products, Peak Lumber & Plywood, Rockbridge Sawmill, AAA Hardwoods and WFP Transportation for the trucking division.
Following Gus Welter’s passing in 2025, Kathy Welter assumed leadership with a commitment to continuing the direction he established while supporting the team responsible for carrying that vision forward.
“Our priority is to build on the foundation Gus created and continue shaping Granite Valley following what he had envisioned,” said Welter.
At the heart of the organization is Granite Valley’s New London, WI, campus, a facility spanning more than seven acres under one roof. The operation processes approximately 32 million board feet annually, including roughly 24 million board feet of incoming green lumber and significant volumes of purchased kiln-dried hardwoods.
“The New London operation is one of the largest hardwood drying and processing facilities in the region. The campus gives us the ability to process significant volumes while maintaining the quality standards our customers expect. That scale is supported by one of Granite Valley’s greatest competitive advantages: control of the supply chain. Through our own sawmills, established supplier network, transportation assets, and value-added processing capabilities, we have developed a level of operational visibility that few hardwood producers can match. The relationships we’ve built with our suppliers are a major part of our success. Many of these partnerships have been in place for years and are built on trust, reliability and mutual growth. Those relationships help ensure a stable supply chain and allow us to provide consistent products for our customers,” shared Welter.
Granite Valley processes approximately 30 hardwood species and actively dries 15 of them. Primary offerings include Red Oak, Hard Maple, Ash, Soft Maple, Basswood, Aspen, Cherry, Hickory, and Walnut in a variety of thicknesses and grades tailored to customer requirements.
While the company offers an extensive product mix, quality remains at the center of every operation.

“One of the things we take the most pride in is grade integrity,” said Welter. “Customers know that when they buy from Granite Valley, they’ll receive lumber that is graded consistently and backed by a strong commitment to quality.”
That commitment begins when lumber arrives at the facility. Green lumber is carefully inspected and graded before entering the drying process. Following kiln drying, material is planed, re-graded, and prepared for shipment. Color sorting capabilities, detailed quality control procedures, and extensive drying capacity allow Granite Valley to consistently meet demanding customer specifications.
“Everything about the facility was designed around producing consistent, high-quality hardwood lumber—from the drying process to grading, processing and final packaging,” Welter explained.
With 40 dry kilns totaling approximately two million board feet of drying capacity, the operation is designed to efficiently manage large volumes while maintaining strict quality standards.
“Our investment in drying technology has helped establish Granite Valley as a trusted supplier to customers across North America and around the world,” noted Welter.
The domestic market continues to be an important part of Granite Valley’s business.

“The domestic market allows us to leverage one of our greatest strengths — service,” said Welter. “Whether customers need mixed loads, multiple thicknesses or reliable delivery schedules, our operation is structured to respond quickly and efficiently.”
At the same time, Granite Valley’s export business has expanded significantly in recent years. The company currently ships to more than 20 countries and continues to grow its international presence through a combination of product quality, reliable logistics and strong customer relationships.
Supporting both domestic and international markets is WFP Transportation, the company’s in-house trucking division. Combined with coordinated container loading operations and rigorous shipping procedures, Granite Valley maintains visibility and control through the final stages of delivery.
“We put a great deal of emphasis on protecting product quality all the way through shipment,” said Welter. “Every export and domestic container is carefully loaded and secured to ensure customers receive lumber in the same condition it left our facility.”
Granite Valley also maintains one of the largest FSC-certified hardwood inventories in the country and is well-positioned to meet evolving regulatory requirements, including the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The company’s established traceability systems and disciplined inventory management provide customers with confidence in both compliance and supply chain transparency.
Today, Granite Valley’s leadership team continues to build upon the foundation Gus Welter established, combining operational expertise with a shared commitment to growth, quality and customer service. Under Kathy Welter’s leadership, the organization remains focused on investing in people, strengthening supplier and customer partnerships and supporting long-term success throughout the hardwood industry.
