The Hardwood Forestry Fund has awarded funding to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry to create an educational site to introduce people to enrichment planting of Oak species when a group of trees is presenting challenges of regenerating by traditional methods.
The site is located in the HarrisonCrawford State Forest, which contains more than 26,000 acres in the central and southern part of the state, bordering the Ohio River.
The planting site was an old field, which was planted in pine many years ago and was subsequently harvested. Site productivity is now 80-90 Oak site index, and Walnut will be planted in areas supportive of species growth. Regeneration will be to Red Maple, Aspen, Sassafras and Yellow Poplar.
