The use of domestic hardwood species was more visible at the recent 2024 Fall High Point Market.

The annual show attracted thousands of manufacturers, retail store buyers and designers from around the world. While attendance was down from the spring market, the volume of introductions was slightly higher.

Topping the list this fall was White Oak with introductions by Century Furniture, Bassett, Vaughan-Bassett and Ashley. There were also new pieces in Red Oak and Soft Maple by these same companies.

Cherry dining room suite continues to be a retailer favorite from Gat Creek.

The number of manufacturers who specify “Oak” in their materials was on the rise. The majority were built from Red Oak but “red” was not printed on the hangtags.

Bassett Furniture expanded two groups in Oak with a wire-brushed surface and satin finish.

Kincaid Furniture introduced this collection in American Ash with natural finish and modern style.

One of the surprise introductions was an Ash group from Kincaid Furniture. The dining and bedroom suites had a natural finish that showcased the wood grain. It was well-received by buyers and Kincaid manufacturing staff reported adequate supplies of raw material.

Kincaid also introduced expansions of Walnut in two groups. Most of these products are made from American hardwoods that are manufactured in Vietnam.

Most salespeople said order writing was down from one year ago and retailers were seeking new pieces or simply filling gaps in current lines. One manufacturer said the volume of interior designers was on the rise.

Home News Now magazine reported at Market a recent survey of furniture buyers that found nearly half of consumers want design help for the whole home. The breakdown included 24 percent who want design help for the living room, 15 percent for the kitchen and 12 percent for the primary bedroom. Only 7 percent sought help for the dining room and the guest bedroom and office tied at 5 percent.

The High Point Market Authority (HPMA) and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) partnered at Market to educate designers. The pavilion included daily presentations to explain design elements throughout the home.

The next High Point Market is set for April 26-30, 2025. Visit www.highpointmarket.org.
