Bryant Church Hardwoods Inc.: A Legacy Shaped By Generations
“In an industry where longevity is earned, not given, Bryant Church Hardwoods Inc. stands as a testament to consistency, discipline and generational stewardship. Based in Wilkesboro, NC, the concentration yard has remained in the hands of the Church family for more than seven decades—quietly building a reputation defined by quality, reliability and long-standing relationships,” stated a Bryant Church company representative.
Today, that legacy continues through fourth-generation leadership. Mason Church and Landon Church represent the latest chapter in a story that began long before the company carried its current name.
The Church family’s involvement in the lumber business dates back generations, beginning with V.M. Church, who established V.M. Church & Son’s Lumber and laid the foundation for what would become a multi-generational presence in the industry. Bryant Church Hardwoods formally took shape in 1953 and from that moment, the foundation was set. By the early 1970s, the company had moved to its current location, where it continues to operate today. “Our longevity is rooted in disciplined decision-making, strong leadership and God’s provision, which has enabled us to sustain and grow our multi-generational family legacy,” Mason said.
That sense of continuity is not just philosophical—it is embedded in the structure of the business. Ownership remains with Tim and Kim Church, while Mason and Landon play active roles in shaping the company’s direction. Their sister, Brooke, manages payroll and human resources, reinforcing what has always defined Bryant Church: a business built on family, accountability and long-term perspective.
What ultimately distinguishes the company, however, is not simply its history, but the clarity of its focus.
Bryant Church Hardwoods has built a strong identity around supplying thick stock material, particularly in 10/4, 12/4 and 16/4 Poplar, much of which serves demanding European distribution and joinery markets. Alongside this specialty, the company maintains a steady flow of standard Poplar and a well-established Red Oak program, including sorted and specialty graded material that continues to see consistent demand both domestically and abroad.
Additional species—White Oak, Hard Maple, Cherry and Hickory—round out the offering, each handled with a disciplined approach to grading, sorting and end-use requirements. Beyond standard specifications, the company works closely with customers to provide custom color sorting and tailored grading programs, ensuring material aligns with specific application requirements. Bryant Church also offers value-added capabilities such as custom thickness orders through planing and ripping to width, further supporting customers who require more precise, ready-to-use material.
While the product mix is diverse, the philosophy remains consistent: understand the customer, anticipate the application and deliver with precision.
“That same mindset extends into the yard,” shared Mason, “where process and attention to detail reinforce the company’s reputation. Lumber is carefully managed under SHADE-DRI® T-sheds to regulate airflow and minimize sun exposure, reducing degrade before kiln drying. Fluted sticks are used for Select species, and protective coatings are applied to higher-value material—measures that, taken together, reflect a commitment to preserving quality at every stage.”
The customer base is equally diverse, spanning flooring, cabinetry, furniture and stair component manufacturers, as well as distribution yards across the United States. From large-scale buyers to small, specialized operations—including Amish craftsmen—one constant remains: precision in specification and consistency in execution.
Orders are rarely generic — length requirements, grading nuances and end-use considerations are often tightly defined, requiring flexibility and responsiveness.
“We pride ourselves on repeat business,” Mason noted. “Many times, we have a product in stock, and if not, we make sure to take care of it in a timely manner.”

Geographically, Bryant Church maintains a broad yet intentional reach, balancing domestic strength with a clearly defined international strategy. Within the United States, shipments move throughout the East Coast, into the Northeast and as far west as California via intermodal containers. Abroad, the company places a strong emphasis on brand presence. In key markets such as the United Kingdom and Spain, products are exported under the ‘BCH’ name —establishing a consistent, recognizable identity tied to quality and reliability. Beyond these core regions, global distribution is managed through Church Hardwood Lumber, the company’s export division and a strategic partnership between Bryant Church Hardwoods and Church & Church Lumber, extending that same standard to customers across the rest of the world.
Behind the scenes, procurement remains intentionally selective. The company sources from a group of trusted mills, prioritizing consistency, relationships and dependable supply over volume. While material may come from as far as Pennsylvania or Ohio, the emphasis remains on maintaining a reliable and repeatable standard.

Operations are supported by a wood waste boiler and a combined kiln capacity of approximately 550,000 board feet, along with a team of 25 employees who manage everything from logistics to grading. It is a lean, experienced operation—structured to maintain control, efficiency and product integrity.
After 73 years, Bryant Church Hardwoods has not positioned itself as the largest player in the market. Instead, it has focused on something more enduring: being a dependable one. In an industry shaped by cycles and change, that consistency has become its own form of brand.
Because for the Church family, success has never been about rapid expansion—it has been about building something that lasts.
