Who's Who in Hardwood Purchasing - June 2023 1

Eddie Deavers is the purchasing manager at PNC Hardwoods DBA Mann and Parker Lumber Co. located in New Freedom, PA. They are a distribution/concentration yard that purchases green lumber, of which they purchase 280,000 board feet of Poplar in thickness of 4/4; 100,000 board feet of Poplar in thickness of 5/4; 120,000 board feet of Soft Maple in thickness of 4/4; 50,000 board feet of Hard Maple in thickness of 4/4; 20,000 board feet of Red Oak in thickness of 4/4; 20,000 board feet of White Oak in thickness of 4/4; and 20-30,000 board feet of miscellaneous Hardwoods in thickness of 4/4, all in grades Common and Better. They purchase approximately 200,000 board feet of kiln-dried, mostly in thick stock items or specialty products.

Mann and Parker Lumber Co. handles lumber in thicknesses of 4/4 through 8/4 in domestic Hardwoods and some imports, as well as thermally modified Hardwoods and yellow pine. They also offer Poplar stair parts, Red and White Oak stair treads and tread blanks. They have an on-site mill shop for custom mouldings.

Deavers started at Mann and Parker Lumber Co. in 2017 where he started as a salesperson for Maryland and Virginia before being moved to a purchasing representative in 2019. He then worked at Danzer of North America for about eight months before returning to be purchasing manager in November 2021 after Mann and Parker Lumber was bought by PNC Hardwoods.

Deavers graduated from Hanover High School before attending California University of Pennsylvania where he studied wildlife and fishery. He received a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences.

Deavers enjoys riding motorcycles, fishing and hunting. He also keeps two fresh water and four salt water fish tanks which total 241 gallons. He has been in a committed relationship for seven years and has a dog and a cat.

Peter Niekamp is a lumber purchaser for Springs Window Fashions, located in Grayling, MI. He has been with Springs Window Fashions for three years and has been a lumber purchaser since June 2022.

Springs Window Fashions manufactures window blinds and shutter components. They purchase seven million board feet of Basswood, mainly in 9/4, but also thicknesses of 4/4, 5/4 and 11/4.

Niekamp has worked in the forest products industry since 1989, when he started at Klise Manufacturing in Grand Rapids, MI. He worked there for 29 years and held many titles, including rough mill supervisor and kiln operator.

Niekamp has his high school diploma and has taken some college courses. He enjoys boating, sailing, snowmobiling and downhill skiing. He has two sons, ages 13 and 15.

Springs Window Fashions is a member of the Lake States Lumber Association.

Seth Moore is the procurement manager, lumber salesman and assistant general manager for R & M Wood, Inc., a concentration yard located in Harrison, AR.

R & M Wood Inc. has the capability of kiln-drying, surfacing and prepping lumber for export. They purchase three million board feet annually. This includes Red and White Oak, Ash, Hickory, Cherry and cedar in thicknesses of 4/4 and 5/4, as well as Soft Maple in thicknesses of 4/4 through 10/4.

Moore started in the forest products industry when he came on at R & M Wood Inc., formally known as TM Wood Products and has been there for eight years. He started out stacking lumber and quickly took an interest in inspecting and began training under Marty Wood, the owner of R & M Wood Inc., just a month after being hired. He then went on to be the lead inspector of the concentration yard for six years. The following two years of his career he has served as procurement manager, lumber salesman and assistant general manager.

Moore, a Harrison High School graduate, is the third generation in his family to work in the forest products industry. His father and grandfather have helped shape him into the successful salesman and procurement manager that he is today.

In Moore’s spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He is also an avid Arkansas Razorback fan.

Moore is married to Molly Moore and the couple has one daughter.
