Sparta WoodWorks’ Specialty Products Include Maples, Oaks

Jay Dee Hanna serves as the operations manager for Sparta WoodWorks and among his duties, he handles lumber purchasing. Located in Sparta, TN, Sparta WoodWorks manufactures specialty products, musical instrument parts, office and casino chair components and boating components. Sparta WoodWorks also offers unique services, such as: small quality runs, CNC routing, finishing and sub-assembly.

The company purchases 150,000 board feet of 4/4 through 8/4 of Ash, Hard and Soft Maple, Red and White Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Sycamore, Beech and Poplar.

Hanna has been with Sparta WoodWorks for over 20 years and since the owner’s retirement seven years ago, he runs the entire operation. Hanna has worked in the forest products industry for 44 years and his first job in the industry was during high school, when he pulled lumber and stacked squares in the summer months. He also has experience in time study, costing, purchasing, cellular design and all phases of manufacturing.

Outside of work, Hanna enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his three grandchildren, Austin, Ashlyn and Scarlett. With his wife of 44 years, Sandra L Hanna, he has two sons, Joshua Heath and John Caleb.

Rex Lumber Buys More Than 60 Domestic Lumber Species

Will Schmertzler is a lumber buyer for Rex Lumber Company, headquartered in Acton, MA. Purchasing more than 25 million board feet annually, Rex Lumber Company serves customers from three locations in the Northeast and one in the mid-Atlantic region.

As a distributor dealing in more than 60 domestic species in sizes 4/4-16/4, Rex Lumber Company specializes in the production of 60,000-plus custom moulding profiles. Beyond this, Rex Lumber Company offers custom stocking programs, blanking, cabinet planning, CAD drawings, computerized cut-to-length, finishing, kiln drying, priming and buffing.

Now with Rex Lumber Company for 13 years, Schmertzler has enjoyed more than four decades in the forest products industry. Beginning as a lumber inspector in Selma, AL, in 1982, he has also spent time as a kiln operator, yard foreman, salesman and sales director.

Married for more than 41 years, he and Judy Schmertzler have three children and three grandchildren. When not working or spending time with family, Schmertzler enjoys golfing, hunting and fishing.

After graduating from South Caldwell High School in Hudson, NC, he spent time in the lumber specialist program at Haywood Community College in Haywood, NC. Schmertzler has also been a volunteer firefighter for 29 years.

High Grade Lumber Enables Plato Woodwork’s Cabinet Success

Brian Crown is Procurement Manager for Plato Woodwork Inc., located in Plato, MN.

Plato Woodwork is a manufacturer of custom cabinets, purchasing a yearly volume of 440,000 board feet of Alder, Cherry, Hard Maple, Rift and Quartered White Oak and Walnut (FAS, No. 1 and No. 2 Common, kiln-dried, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4, 6 to 8 percent moisture content, Hit/Miss in 15/16-inch).

The company also offers design services and a co-op advertising program.

Crown graduated from Perry Senior High School, Perry, IA, in 1987 and Northwest Technical Institute, St. Paul, MN, in 1991. He has worked at Plato Woodwork for 17 years in his current position, in which he handles lumber purchasing in addition to overseeing order processing and raw material negotiations.
