Saint John, New Brunswick–J.D. Irving Ltd., based here, has announced a $35 million modernization and expansion of its sawmill in Doaktown, NB, which produces Eastern White Pine products.

The project will add 14,000 square feet and bring together the sawmill, planer mill and value-added center under one roof. State-of-the-art technology will be installed throughout the lumber production process, a company statement said.

“On completion, this site will be one of the most modern of its kind in North America,” said Jerome Pelletier, vice president of sawmills. Spring 2021 is the targeted date for the facility’s commissioning and start-up.

“This investment means long-term security for our village,” Doaktown Mayor Jeff Porter said. “You know when J.D. Irving invests that much into your village, they’re not going to close something down in a few years, they’re here to stay. Hats off to J.D. Irving and their staff.”

J.D. Irving is a privately owned conglomerate company that is involved in forestry and forest products, agriculture, food processing, transportation and shipbuilding.
