In Memoriam 1

John “Jack” Martin Hetherington

It is with deep sadness that the Heatherington family announced the passing of John “Jack” Martin Hetherington at Poppy Residences in Burnaby, BC on May 21, 2025, at the age of 81. Predeceased by parents John and Anne Hetherington, sister Susan, and partner Christine, Jack is survived by Camilla Hetherington, mother of his adult children John, Dave and Nikol, grandchildren, Kyle, Megan, David, Shifa, Evan and Erik, daughter-in-law Gaetanne, son-in-law Kai, and niece and nephew, Lori and Jeremie. All family, friends, and neighbors will miss him dearly.

Born in Vancouver, BC on March 1, 1944, Jack lived a life marked by service, adventure and connection with family, friends and community. Following in his father’s maritime footsteps Jack garnered his Navigation Ticket after graduating from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland. He launched out into a six-year career travelling the world as a ship’s officer with the Merchant Marine on cargo/passenger vessels and he held a commission as Captain in Canada’s Naval Reserve, embodying his patriotic commitment to his country.

After starting a family, Jack’s professional journey evolved from foreman on the Vancouver docks, to becoming a successful lumber broker, first with Ed Probyn, then his own venture Evergreen Empire Mills, and later with Skana Forest Products. Beyond his professional achievements, Jack Hetherington was recognized as a gifted writer and award-winning public speaker.

Together with Christine Harper, Jack embraced community service with enthusiasm, as Captain and Mrs. Canada and as BC Lions superfans. The pair became beloved local figures, spreading joy at various community events including July 1st celebrations.

A Celebration of Life was held at Living Waters Church in Langley Township, BC.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jack’s name to the Honor House Society.

“Fair winds and following seas, Captain Jack.”
