Elgin, OR, Gains New Retail Lumber Yard
Contractor Tyler Kennon opened Kennon Lumber Co., a new retail lumber yard with a showroom, on April 5, but their grand opening has been scheduled for some time in May.
The 4,000 square foot building on 3.8 acres was purchased from Elgin High School in February. Half of the building is occupied by the lumber yard and if everything goes according to plan, Kennon wants to rent out the unoccupied half of the building for a full-service hardware store.
The lumber yard mainly works with Cedar products such as log cabin siding and fencing. Locally made Cedar picnic tables, trellises, chicken coops and raised planter boxes have been placed in a display area.

165-Year-Old Family Business Sold To Schockman Lumber Group
Alan Pippenger, the chair of the Dayton, OH, company claimed that he wasn’t intending to sell Requarth Co. when they were approached by Schockman President Doug Bruns. Bruns presented Pippenger with how well the companies mesh and that combining the businesses would guarantee that Requarth remains a family business in downtown Dayton, OH, under the Requarth name.
Requarth Co., which has been around since 1860, is famous for selling wood to the Wright Brothers, who utilized the products to build their airplanes.
Pippenger explained how selling was a difficult decision, but he and his family are confident about the company’s future under the Schockman Lumber Group and Bruns family. Pippenger retired as the company president over a year ago and general manager Alan Lee, who is pleased that the Schockman Group is family-owned and operated by local staff, took the reins.
Bruns expressed that his family is familiar with Requarth’s deep history and that five generations of family operating the lumber company over 165 years is impressive.
