In Memoriam – John L. Mallery

In Memoriam - John L. Mallery 1

The following obituary was provided to the National Hardwood Magazine by Javan Mallery.

John L. Mallery, 91, of Port Allegany, PA, went to be with his Heavenly Father on December 14, 2025.

Just as hardwood lumber embodies strength, endurance and dependability, so too is the legacy John leaves. In 1953, John was a proud graduate of the 9th class of the NHLA Inspector Training School in Memphis, TN.

John loved figuring out how to get “more out of the log.” He inspired multiple generations to work in hardwood lumber, including generations attending the NHLA Inspector Training School. His time in Memphis meant a great deal to John. He even sang on a gospel radio program while in Memphis.

He was a hardworking man to the core. As he worked all his years in the hardwood industry he took pride in honest labor. At 14, John started piling lumber for his older brother Bob Mallery in Hancock, NY. Eventually, he served as Vice President and then President of Mallery Lumber in Hancock, NY, and Emporium, PA.  In these roles, he oversaw daily operations and mentored many along the way. His strong work ethic, leadership and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of all who worked with him.

In Memoriam

He was a man who loved God with all his heart and served Him faithfully with a life marked with generosity, humility and devotion. His faith and love guided every step he took and was reflected in the way he loved people. Anyone who met him was touched by his kindness and drawn in by his incredible smile. His smile immediately made others feel welcomed and valued.

As a proud member of the Rotary Club, John embraced its mission of “Service Above Self” and worked tirelessly to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

In Memoriam - John L. Mallery 2

He faithfully served in church communities throughout his life, finding great joy in worship and music. John sang in the church choir. He served as a deacon in the Baptist Church
in Hancock, was a longtime elder at Myrtle Gospel Tabernacle and co pastored at Faith Church of Charity. A passionate believer in missions, John strongly supported spreading the gospel around the world. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered; but his love, faith, and example will live on in the generations he leaves behind.

The funeral service was held at the New Beginnings Assembly of God church in Kane, PA.
