Ryan Marrs

Ryan Marrs Joins McDonough Manufacturing As A Sales Representative

McDonough Manufacturing recently announced the hire of Ryan Marrs as a sales representative.

Marrs brings 22 years in the hardwood lumber industry, with a background that spans logging, lumber inspection, headsaw and resaw operations, sawmill and plant management, engineering, capital projects, and multi-site operations. He has worked his way through the business from the production floor to management, giving him a well-rounded understanding of how mills operate day to day.

He attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association Inspector Training School and completed a Project Management course through Syracuse University. Most of his knowledge, however, comes from years of working directly in mills and learning what works and what does not in real operating conditions.

Throughout his career, Marrs has managed multiple sawmill operations, led capital improvement projects, and worked closely with equipment suppliers. Now he’s able to bring that experience directly to customers, helping them make equipment decisions that make sense for their operation.

“I’ve spent my career working through many of the same challenges mills face every day,” said Marrs.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Marrs now lives in Western New York with his wife Beth and their seven children. Outside of work, he enjoys construction projects, operating equipment, working on his property, camping and spending time with his family, often supporting his kids in their many sporting activities.

The new Cleereman Premier Bandmill

Cleereman Industries’ New Cleereman Premier Bandmill

Cleereman Industries, based in Newald, WI, recently announced the release of a new product. The 6’ or 7’ Cleereman Premier Bandmill is available as a single or double cut or right or left-hand version. An Air Strain System and a Double Column is included. An extended column is also available for tilted machines or for a larger throat opening, in addition to a 17-Degree Slant option. All 6’ bandmills have an oversized SKF Double Row Spherical Bearing Standard.

President of Cleereman Industries, Paul Cleereman, stated that the bandmill is “built to last, weighing over 29,000 pounds.” He described the new product as “engineered the Cleereman way – designed for higher production, greater flexibility, longer life and reduced maintenance. Built with the durability, reliability and performance sawmills demand.”

The new bandmill includes Cleereman’s Exclusive Dead Shaft Design with 6’ steel Premier Bandwheels for smoother operation. The machine’s bottom wheel design is crafted for increased stability with cooler bearing temperatures, while the shaft and bearings used in both bottom and top wheels are rated for 50,000 pounds of load strain.

“The bottom shaft deflection is non-rotating compared to those from other manufacturers live wheel designs, causing the shafts to have heat and vibration.

The machine is dynamically balanced for speeds up to 12,500 SFPM standard, allowing for the band-mill to run at higher RPM’s than cast wheels with less vibration than any competitor’s wheel design,” added Cleereman.

NWFA Completes 86th Home With Gary Sinise Foundation

The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has provided flooring for its 86th home in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment). The R.I.S.E. program builds mortgage-free, custom, specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders. The home dedication for U.S. Army Sergeant (Ret.) Mary Dague took place recently in Four Oaks, NC. Flooring for the project was donated by NWFA member Peachey Hardwood.

Sergeant Dague was moved to serve after witnessing the events of 9/11. During a deployment in Iraq in 2007, she and her team were called to dispose of an IED placed between a school and an apartment building. After the device was dismantled and prepared for transport, she noticed it rocking back and forth and instinctively hugged it to her body to shield her team. The blast resulted in the loss of both her arms.

“In addition to losing both her arms in service to our country, Sergeant Dague also has battled breast cancer,” said Stephanie Owen, NWFA President and CEO.

In addition to the 86 homes already completed, NWFA is, at the time of this writing, working with its members to source wood flooring for 13 additional R.I.S.E. homes in various stages of planning and construction. Currently, 163 NWFA member companies have donated product, logistics, and installation services in locations throughout the United States, with a total value of more than $7 million. A list of all NWFA R.I.S.E. participating companies can be found at nwfa.org/giving-back.aspx.

The National Wood Flooring Association is a not-for-profit trade organization, with more than 3,000 member companies world-wide, dedicated to educating consumers, architects, designers, specifiers and builders in the uses and benefits of wood flooring.

The NWFA is located in St. Charles, MO, and can be contacted at 800-422-4556 (USA and Canada), 636-519-9663 (local and international), or at nwfa.org.
