Lake States Business Trends May 2026 – A Stable Lake States Market
Hardwood market activity across the Lake States region has remained generally steady in recent weeks, according to suppliers. While contacts described business as stable rather than strong, several noted that consistent order flow has helped maintain regular production schedules. Demand continues to vary by species and end-use sector, with cabinetry and millwork showing more resilience than flooring markets in some areas.
A supplier in Indiana said overall hardwood activity has held relatively consistent since the start of the year. “It’s been kind of riding the same for a while,” he said. “It’s okay. Fair, I guess I would call it.” The source noted that the first two to three weeks of January brought a noticeable increase in orders following the typical year-end slowdown. “The first two or three weeks of January really took off, which isn’t abnormal,” he said. “People slow down toward the end of the year, and since then it’s been pretty steady.”
Among the company’s domestic hardwood offerings, Hickory demand has increased significantly since the beginning of the year. “As kind of a surprise, since we turned the calendar, Hickory demand has gone crazy,” the Indiana source said. “Not sure where that came from, but Hickory demand is way up.” At the same time, he noted that some species have begun to level off after stronger movement earlier in the cycle. “Maple has kind of flattened out as well,” he said. “I don’t think anything is going to tank, but a few items have flattened.” The supplier added that toward the latter part of last year some species became overproduced, making them more difficult to move for a period of time, although inquiries have begun to increase again in recent weeks.

Feedback from customers has varied depending on their end markets. “Some guys still say it’s tough to move product,” he said. Flooring markets in particular remain challenging, he added, while other sectors are performing better. “Flooring in general seems like it’s still pretty tough,” he said. “Cabinetry and millwork still seem pretty strong.” Looking ahead to the next 30 to 60 days, the Indiana contact expects conditions to remain relatively balanced as seasonal logging conditions improve. “Up here we’re still fighting weight restrictions on the roads,” he said. “Those should be coming off in the next couple weeks, so log supply in the woods should start coming in.” Transportation availability has remained adequate, although freight rates have been trending upward due in part to rising fuel costs.
A supplier in Michigan said the company handles a range of domestic hardwoods primarily in 4/4, 5/4, and 6/4 thicknesses, including industrial material.
The contact said demand for these products has remained relatively stable, with manufacturers continuing to purchase material for a variety of applications. Industrial grades remain an important part of the company’s product mix, particularly for customers producing components and secondary wood products.
The contact said overall market activity in the area has been fairly steady, with most buyers purchasing material as needed rather than building large inventories. According to the contact, consistent purchasing patterns from established customers have helped maintain regular order flow even as some sectors remain cautious. While the market has not seen a significant surge in activity, the supplier said steady demand for common domestic hardwood thicknesses has supported ongoing production levels.
In Wisconsin, a supplier said the company handles a wide range of species typical to the Lake States region, including Red and White Oak, Hard and Soft Maple, Ash, Aspen, Basswood, Hickory and Cherry. The contact said demand for these species remains tied closely to the region’s diverse manufacturing base, which includes furniture components, cabinetry, millworkand other wood product applications.
The source added that steady demand across multiple species categories has helped maintain consistent movement of domestic hardwood products.
While some end-use sectors continue to face challenges, ongoing purchases from core manufacturing customers have helped keep operations moving at a stable pace.
Across the Lake States region, suppliers generally described a market that remains stable but cautious. Seasonal factors such as road weight restrictions and logging conditions continue to influence log availability in some areas, though contacts expect those conditions to improve as spring approaches. Overall, suppliers indicated that steady demand from key manufacturing sectors continues to support hardwood consumption throughout the region.
