Why Knot Strengthen Your ROI?

As I travel across the industry, I have the opportunity to visit a wide variety of operations—hardwood and softwood mills, engineered wood facilities, cabinet and furniture plants, pulp mills, thermal modification operations, pellet mills, pallet manufacturers, and more.

Why Knot Strengthen Your ROI?

While each business is unique, they all share one thing in common beyond wood: relationships. The people who love this industry care deeply about one another and want to see the entire wood products sector succeed.

That idea came to mind recently when I read an article stating that money is one of the most common causes of conflict in relationships. That certainly isn’t surprising when it comes to marriages, but it made me think about another relationship, the one between NHLA and its members.

When memberships are canceled, financial concerns are often part of the conversation. We hear comments such as:

  •    “Leadership reorganization and cutting back on organizations and associations.”
  •    “The value is not worth the amount of dues paid.”
  •    “Significant financial constraints and cost-reduction decisions.”
  •    “We weren’t able to get the business we needed out of NHLA.”

At the heart of these concerns is a simple question: Is there a return on investment?

That’s a fair question, and one we should talk about openly.

The NHLA is committed to supporting your business’s success and ensuring that membership delivers meaningful value. We help by connecting you with buyers through conventions, networking opportunities, and direct introductions. We provide industry information through digital platforms, social media, and print publications. We help strengthen relationships with both customers and suppliers.

Likewise, we don’t manufacture your products. We help you improve production by providing grading expertise, yield improvement resources, employee training, inspection services, and technical support. Our National Inspectors build relationships with companies in their regions and work alongside them to improve operations and solve problems.

Beyond these services, NHLA provides programs that individual companies often cannot develop cost-effectively on their own. Benchmarking studies help you understand how your operation compares to industry peers. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies demonstrate the environmental advantages of hardwood products. Our community platform helps members connect, share information, and stay informed.

These initiatives exist because they benefit the industry as a whole, even when they may not generate a direct profit on their own. Membership dues allow us to pool resources and invest in programs that create long-term value for everyone.

That creates an interesting challenge. Members understandably want measurable value from their investment. At the same time, many of the industry’s most important benefits: industry standards, market development, education, advocacy, and professional networks, are only possible when companies invest collectively.

Consider the NHLA Rules. They provide an industry-led grading framework that has allowed the hardwood market to thrive for more than a century. Even companies using proprietary grades benefit from the defect definitions, consistency, and independence that the Rules provide. Without a strong industry association, those standards could be shaped by outside interests rather than by the industry itself.

But perhaps the most valuable benefit is one that is difficult to measure: relationships.

The relationships built through NHLA membership create opportunities that rarely appear on a balance sheet. They are developed through conventions, committee meetings, training programs, golf tournaments, and countless conversations between industry professionals. Many companies participate in regional organizations because of the relationships they foster. The same principle applies nationally and, arguably, with even greater impact.

When companies choose not to join or participate, NHLA loses more than dues revenue. The industry loses engagement, expertise, and opportunities to strengthen the connections that help businesses grow.

That’s why I encourage you to attend the NHLA Convention in Cleveland next month. Play in the ITSEF golf tournament. Meet someone new. Reconnect with an old friend. Strengthen your relationship with another company, or with NHLA itself.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the hardwood industry runs on relationships. Business is built on trust, and trust takes time. The strongest returns often come not from a single transaction, but from relationships developed over years of working together.

So yes, ROI matters. It always will.

But in a relationship-oriented industry, the greatest return on investment often begins with the relationship itself.
