Tariffs, Market Conditions Among NELA Topics

The New England Lumbermen’s Association (NELA) recently held their winter meeting at the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, VT, where members were able to hear some pertinent speakers covering topics relative to the issues they are facing on a daily basis, as well as network with attending members.  Approximately 90 attendees were treated to the high level of hospitality provided by the Inn for the day.

The morning started off with coffee and registration where members were able to meet with friends and colleagues before listening to Charlie Levesque from Natural Innovative Resources with his update on the Carbon Credit Market as it pertains to activity here.

The members were treated next to Dr. Steve Bick’s presentation on the Vermont Business School that he oversees and his most recent forestry-related software he has written to make decisions in the field quicker and easier, which are available free to the NELA members.

The last speaker was Eric Kingsley, who is a partner with Charlie Levesque at Natural Innovative Resources. He spoke about current market conditions that the hardwood industry is facing including the most recent tariff threats and their impact on future business activity.

The busy schedule left just enough time for the group to have their popular “Business Discussion” amongst members, moderated by President Bob Chase, of Quabbin Timber, where members share their current market experiences and projections for the future.  The topic of recently imposed tariffs dominated the discussion as most members expressed frustration at the idea of any sanctions hurting their bottom lines.

After a long day of speakers and discussion, the members enjoyed a dinner and after-hours social time with their fellow colleagues to discuss what they had learned.

Questions about NELA should be directed to Chris Castano, secretary/treasurer, who can be contacted at ccastano@mainewoods.net.
