Promoting Southern Cypress
In March, members of the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association (SCMA), along with promotion sponsors, gathered for the association’s 2025 Annual Meeting at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Memphis in Memphis, TN. The event was held in conjunction with the Hardwood Manufacturers Association’s 2025 Southern Regional Meeting. Attendees received an update on Cypress promotion initiatives, previewed projects for this year, enjoyed a networking reception and dinner, and went on the HMA’s facility tours. Following is a brief recap of what attendees heard.
Over the past year, the SCMA concentrated its promotion activities on producing editorial and website content, growing its social media following with branded posts, and publishing a DIY video tutorial.
The video tutorial was developed in partnership with Home Improvement and Repairs magazine to show savvy DIYers how to build an attractive and durable grill table out of Cypress. The project was featured in the summer print edition of the magazine, as well as online and on social media.
Looking ahead to this year, the SCMA will produce several new editorial features, highlighting interior and exterior Cypress applications, and showcasing how and why homeowners should bring the natural beauty of Cypress into their homes. The articles will be distributed to news outlets across the country.
The SCMA also is working on a video project with a Nashville-based videographer and woodworker. The project will show DIYers how to install a gorgeous—practical and functional—acoustical slat wall and ceiling in a home office.
In addition, the SCMA is developing a continuing education unit (CEU) for architects. The CEU will be a valuable tool to help inform the design community on the unique qualities of Cypress; its suitability for a myriad of interior and exterior applications; and why it should be specified in place of Western Red Cedar, pressure-treated wood, and other alternatives.
