AWMA Meeting Includes Discussion Of Uncertainty Caused By China’s Log Ban

The American Walnut Manufacturers Association (AWMA) met recently during the Annual Convention of the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association (IHLA) in Indianapolis to conduct their annual business meeting.

AWMA members discussed in detail the impacts of the China log ban and the rippling effect that it has had on the Walnut industry. Obviously, the abrupt decision by China to ban logs entering their country created immediate uncertainty in the entire Walnut market.

AWMA members reported robust domestic markets for lumber, and most reported an uptick in export lumber inquiries in China and Vietnam in particular. Members discussed a new emphasis to develop domestic marketing strategies that include participating in non-traditional trade shows in the United States.

AWMA’s next meeting will be at the National Hardwood Lumber Association convention in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 1-3.
