Membership attendance was a bit light but those attending had a great discussion on all things Walnut, noted AWMA Executive Director Brian Brookshire. Logging capacity across the Eastern United States remains a substantial concern. Of the 10 states represented at the meeting, the average age of a logger is approximately 57 and very little capacity is being built with younger generations. Even though China still has an existing log ban for logs originating from the U.S., export of Walnut sawlogs to Vietnam is at a feverish pace. Competition for Walnut logs in the United States remains very high, creating a smaller than desirable price gap between green and kiln-dried lumber. Most kiln-dried items are selling at a good pace. AWMA is looking to focus more on domestic marketing and promotion and participating more in non-traditional trade shows, such as the National Association of Home Builders International Builders Show, American Institute of Architects, and becoming more engaged with design schools in the U.S. AWMA’s next meeting will be at the IHLA Convention in 2026.

First established in 1912, the purpose of the American Walnut Manufacturers Association is to promote the availability and prestigious image of Walnut products while fostering good forest management and raw material conversion practices which maximize the value of the timber resource.

The Association is a source of information for interested individuals and landowner groups, though specifically offering support to its member firms with educational materials and guidance.

The Association also acts as an advocate in support of the unique grading rules for Walnut lumber as established by the National Hardwood Lumber Association. Because the Association views its membership as the foundation for its existence, it actively seeks prospective members that share the values and common purpose of the organization.
