West Coast Business Trends August 2026 – Steady Best Describes West Coast Lumber Market

Suppliers across the West Coast described hardwood markets as generally steady, though few reported significant momentum at the time of this writing. Most sources accounted for stable business activity with customers continuing to buy what they need while remaining cautious about future commitments.

In southern California, a hardwood distributor described activity as stagnant, noting that conditions are largely unchanged from the previous 90 days. The source markets a variety of domestic hardwoods, including Poplar, Red and White Oak, Walnut and Alder in thicknesses ranging from 4/4 through 16/4 where applicable.

According to the source, Poplar remains a consistent performer, while White Oak and Walnut continue to benefit from architectural demand. “There hasn’t been a big change,” the source said.

Although business remains active, the California contact noted a lack of optimism among customers, attributing much of the hesitation to ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty. “I think business on the whole is still kind of okay,” the supplier said.

Transportation availability has not been a major concern, though freight costs continue to move higher and remain a factor in overall pricing.

In Washington, a contact handling most domestic hardwood species reported conditions largely unchanged. The company markets a range of species with a focus on Alder, Ash, Oak and Maple in thicknesses from 4/4 through 8/4.

Unlike other suppliers in the region, the source said transportation has not presented significant challenges. “We’ve had the same relationships with trucking companies for years,” the source said. He also noted that fluctuating fuel prices have become a familiar part of doing business.

“We see this trend of fuel prices changing depending on the administration,” he explained. “Anyone in this business for any length of time just knows this is part of the game. It will settle back down, but until then we get after it just the same.”

Looking ahead, the Washington supplier expects little change in market conditions during the near term.

A separate California distributor described business as seasonally normal and reported that customers remain busy despite broader market concerns.

The source markets 4/4 and 8/4 Walnut, Hard and Soft Maple, Yellow Birch, Red and White Oak, Hickory and Cherry. According to the contact, customers continue purchasing material as needed, though buying habits remain disciplined. “Our customers are still getting just what they need, but they are getting more of it,” the source said.

The California distributor also reported an uptick in Hickory demand. “Hickory has come to the forefront of our orders recently and availability is tightening because of it,” the source said.

While transportation costs are expected to have a moderate impact on activity, the source believes the market will continue to adapt. “At the end of the day, our customers need product, we sell product and everyone absorbs the additional costs,” the source said.

Looking ahead, he expects the next 30 days to remain steady, though not exceptional.

Throughout the region West Coast suppliers continue to report stable demand patterns, cautious purchasing behavior and ongoing attention to transportation costs. While uncertainty remains, most sources expect market conditions to remain relatively consistent.
