Adapt & Advance: Innovation And Integrity Drive Mullican Flooring Forward

In an industry built on both craftsmanship and calculation, Mullican Flooring continues to stay ahead of the curve, thanks to strategic reinvestment, bold market awareness and an unwavering commitment to its partners. With operations spanning four facilities in Tennessee, Virginia, New York, and West Virginia, and lumber purchases in excess of 70 million board feet annually, this family-owned manufacturer remains firmly rooted in Red and White Oak, Hickory, and the values instilled when J.S. Mullican founded the company in 1985.

Mullican Flooring purchases over 70 million board feet of hardwoods annually.

Rooted along the Appalachian Mountains, Mullican draws most of its lumber locally, ensuring consistent grain quality, precise drying, and environmentally responsible sourcing. Today, the company employs more than 500 people and maintains rigorous quality control across its solid and engineered lines, delivering products defined by precision milling, advanced kiln-drying and multi-stage inspections.

While White Oak currently dominates market demand, driven by media, design trends and online platforms, Mullican continues to manufacture significant volumes of Hickory and maintains smaller runs of Maple.

“White Oak is the hot topic,” said Neil Wenger, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “It’s all over social media and design shows. But Hickory remains a staple for customers who prefer a more traditional aesthetic.”

That responsiveness to evolving tastes is a hallmark of Mullican’s business strategy. The company recently unveiled Tennessee Artisan, a 100 percent domestically produced engineered flooring line that features Appalachian White Oak and Hickory veneers over a plywood core. “There aren’t many fully domestic engineered floors out there,” Wenger said. “This one is competitively priced and built to go head-to-head with imported products.”

Mullican has also expanded several of its existing collections, adding new colors and textures to meet demand for natural, neutral palettes with wire-brushed and sawn-face finishes. These trend-driven updates have extended to both its solid and engineered product offerings and reflect a commitment to design-forward development.

That same spirit of innovation can be seen in Mullican’s production facilities. The company recently completed installation of a new AI-powered rough rip system at its Norton, VA, plant. This scanner-based system evaluates incoming lumber and makes cut decisions to optimize yield, labor efficiency and targeted width distribution. “It allows us to be smarter with the wood, make specific cuts for flooring needs, and deliver faster without compromising quality,” said Wenger. “It’s already made a measurable impact.”

Wenger attributes the company’s agility to its structure and culture.

“We’re entrepreneurial. We can move faster than some larger competitors because we’re lean and deeply connected at every level of the company.”

In addition to Wenger, key personnel include VP of Lumber Purchasing Tony Honeycutt, VP of Manufacturing Kyle Evans, and President Pat Oakley, all long-tenured professionals well-known in the hardwood sector and deeply involved in trade organizations and community initiatives.

Mullican also takes pride in giving back. The company has donated more than a dozen custom floors to wounded veterans through its ongoing partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program. “It’s something we care deeply about,” Wenger said. “Any visibility that inspires others to support these efforts is a win.”

Renewability and sustainability remain a core value. A founding member of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Responsible Procurement Program, Mullican is Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc (AHMI)-verified and FSC® certified, with most lumber sourced directly from the Appalachian region. While FSC-certified runs remain a smaller portion of orders due to supply chain costs and limited consumer education, the company remains ready to fulfill those jobs when needed. “We continue to make FSC certified runs for high-end or mission-driven projects,” said Wenger.

From the handcrafted character of its solid hardwood offerings to the expanded engineered lines like Nordic Naturals, Wexford Solid, Castillian, Haven, Serenity, and Tennessee Artisan, Mullican’s catalog includes more than 1,500 SKUs and is available through over 40 distributors and 5,000 retail locations across North America. In recent merchandising upgrades, Mullican has leaned into in-store display improvements and refreshed marketing assets to showcase the grain, texture, and finish of its best-selling collections.

So, what sets Mullican apart? Wenger believes the answer depends on who you ask.

“For our distributors and retail partners, it’s flexibility and follow-through. We listen, we move quickly, and we’re focused on long-term relationships. For end consumers, it’s style, quality and trust—knowing they’re getting flooring that fits their space, their lifestyle and their values.”

Mullican Flooring is a proud member of the NWFA, Decorative Hardwoods Association, AHMI and many other state and local industry trade organizations. The company also participates actively in the NWFA Responsible Procurement Program.
