Wagner Hosts First Penn-York Meeting Of The New Year

Wagner Hardwoods in Cayuta, NY, served as the recent host of a Penn-York Lumbermen’s Club meeting. Held at Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, the dinner meeting featured guest speaker Dana Lee Cole, executive director of the Hardwood Federation. She spoke about key hardwood issues facing the industry in 2025.

Started in 1976 by Les Wagner and Steve Schaeffer, Wagner Lumber began sawing Hemlock to order. Over the next 15 years Wagner Lumber grew from two employees to 15 and changed its emphasis to the high quality Northern hardwoods of its area. Since 1988 lumber production has increased to 60 million board feet annually, according to the company’s website.

In 2001, Wagner Lumber purchased its second facility in Cayuta, NY, called Wagner Hardwoods. This move doubled the size of the company and positioned The Wagner Companies as one of the largest hardwood lumber manufacturers in the Northeast, noted its website. Continuing with their history of innovation and expansion, The Wagner Companies purchased Pomeroy Lumber Company of Nineveh, NY, in 2007. Also during 2007, Wagner established a full service log yard in Friendship, NY.

In 2012 Wagner joined forces with Baillie Lumber and today is part of what is referred to as The Baillie Group.

Wagner offers lumber kiln-dried or green and also provides “Shipping Dry” to foreign destinations.

The company offers a wide and diversified inventory of lumber in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, 12/4, and 16/4 thicknesses in most species and grades. They specialize in thick stock in all species, noted their website.
