Home Lumber Acquired By Bishop, CA-Based High Country Lumber

Three years after Milt Johnson, who operated three Home Lumber yards sold them to Stock Building Supply in 2006, Stock planned to shut down the Bishop, CA, location until Johnson’s son Brent got involved. Brent’s involvement helped High Country Lumber acquire Home Lumber.

Brent Johnson described the joy he felt while serving the local and nearby communities with building materials for the last 15 years and has decided that it was time for his retirement to Southern California. He explained his decision to sell Home Lumber’s assets to High Country Lumber, a bigger, yet locally and family-owned business since the 1970s that operates stores in Bishop, CA and nearby Mammoth Lakes, CA. Johnson hopes that the transition of assets to the business, which has been employee owned since 2022, will be easy and that top tier service would continue to be provided to customers.

Oklahoma-Based Apex Lumber Acquired By Star Lumber

CEO of Star Lumber, Patrick Goebel, believes that the Tulsa, OK and Oklahoma City, OK, two pro-oriented building materials contractor yards formerly owned by Apex Lumber, will increase Star Lumber’s capabilities to service professional builders in those markets. These are primary reasons Star acquired Apex. The management and transition will be overseen by 49- year industry veteran, Randy Chippeaux.

Goebel said he is excited to have Apex join the Star Lumber team. The most recent additions to Star Lumber’s Oklahoma expansion are the contractor yards, the truss plant in El Reno, OK and the countertop fabrication plant located in Oklahoma City, OK, that opened in 2022, in addition to the builder flooring showroom in Tulsa that opened in 2023. These add-ons bring the head count for the Oklahoma location to around 100 employees.
A builder flooring showroom has been operated by Star in Oklahoma City, OK, since 2008. Star Lumber reached its 85th year in business in 2024.

New Jersey’s Trex Added By Boise Cascade

Distribution of Trex became the sole brand of composite decking and railing that Boise Cascade carries at all locations across the nation.

In addition to expanding their product offerings and building their decking portfolio with Trex Signature, Trex Transcend Lineage and launching a comprehensive collection of Trex-branded deck fasteners, the business also added new railing profiles and materials to create what is said to be the most diverse portfolio of deck railings in the category.

Jeff Strom, executive vice president of building materials distribution for Boise Cascade Co., complimented Trex’s continued improvements and additions, detailing that the railing lineup, which corresponds with their decking portfolio, provides customers with all they could desire.

The latest additions to their railing line include steel, aluminum and composite solutions created to grant builders and homeowners options beyond PVC and wood. They also added specialty glass systems and premium cable. Bret Martz, vice president of North American professional sales for Trex, boasted about their product portfolio, saying that it is robust and strategic, allowing them to compete fiercely in each major decking and railing category. He also mentioned how Trex offers cladding, fascia, lighting options and fasteners that give customers a seamless and untroubled deck construction experience.

Boise Cascade, through 39 distribution locations, serves industrial customers, building material dealers and home improvement centers across the United States while based in Boise, ID. To achieve a networkwide relationship with Trex, Boise has made plans to expand the Trex service area to include Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Southern New York and Long Island.

Strom explained why Boise Cascade is pleased about growing this relationship with Trex, stating that Trex is an industry leader committed to innovating their product lines for the sake of advancing the outdoor living category.
Martz, like Strom, is excited as well and is looking forward to enjoying more of their already long and successful partnership with Boise Cascade, which Boise, as Martz mentioned, has the benefits of a national distributor paired with personalized service and the responsiveness of a regional operation.
