Montrose, CO—Montrose Forest Products has proposed investing $20 million to expand its mill here pending approval of long-term lumber supply deals with the San Juan National Forest in southwest Colorado.
The mill announced it is working on expansion plans to process Ponderosa Pine harvested from the San Juan National Forest with the approval of the counties where the timber would be logged. The company has requested enough Ponderosa Pine to process 20 million board feet per year over the next 20 years.
Thinning the overstocked forests in surrounding counties will lessen the growing risk of major beetle infestations and large wildfires, such as the Missionary Ridge Fire in 2002, the Vallecito Fire in 2012 and the Draw Fire in 2017, all within San Juan National Forest.
The upgrades could be completed in two years, after which the facility would produce 1x4, 1x6 and 1x8 lumber for construction and decking. The chips and bark will be sold for oil fields, landscaping and other uses.
Montrose Forest Products is a division of Neiman Enterprises Inc.
